Struga Castle
The Renaissance-Baroque castle in Struga is sometimes referred to as a palace because it is very grand and impressive. It existed before 1453.
Originally, a medieval defensive castle belonging to the von Czettritz family stood on this site, which was expanded in the second half of the 15th century. This resulted in a two-story building with a square tower built in one corner. In 1565, the castle was expanded again, this time by three wings, including the west wing, in which a representative hall with a vaulted ceiling supported by columns was built. The older tower was incorporated into the front wing, while the octagonal part was slightly raised. The resulting inner courtyard was surrounded by a cloister.
The Renaissance castle was baroqueized in the 1830s. A baroque portal was placed in the main entrance, above which a Renaissance coat of arms frieze was added later. The appearance of the castle in Struha thus crystallized over several centuries. It is a four-winged, three-story building with an inner courtyard, originally covered with arcades. It is covered with mansard roofs. It is dominated by a tower built on a rectangular ground plan, which transitions into an octagon at the height of the roofs and is topped with a pyramidal dome. In 2019, during the renovation of the dance hall, 16th-century wall paintings were accidentally discovered. Next to the castle stands a two-winged Baroque residential and farm building from the 18th century, covered with a mansard roof. Currently, the owners of the castle live there. They run a hotel and restaurant in the farm building. They are renovating the chateau as much as they can. It is possible to visit it on selected days. Historical picnics and reenactments of the Battle of Struga are also held here with the participation of reenactors.
