Boar Monument in Świdnica
This bronze sculpture stands on Franciszkańska Street, not far from the town square. It refers to the coat of arms of Świdnica, one of whose four fields features a wild boar—a symbol of courage, bravery, and masculinity. Rubbing the ear of the largest boar is said to bring good luck in life.
The boar statue was installed on April 25, 2014, and has become part of the Świdnica landscape and one of the symbols of the city. The idea to refer to the city's history in this artistic way came from Świdnica resident Aleksander Mazij. The author of the statue is Wrocław artist Grzegorz Łagowski, a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg and the author of many well-known sculptures.
The family of wild boars consists of six individuals - one large (102 cm high) and five small ones. The whole weighs 1.2 tons and measures 1.6x4.06 m. One small boar sits on a chest with a padlock and guards its contents. The second one has glasses on its nose. Books are placed around the boars, symbolizing the traditions, culture, and achievements of the town's inhabitants.
First, in 2013, a crypt was dug at the site where the monument was to be built, and a memorial box from the inhabitants of Świdnica, a kind of time capsule, was placed in it. It contained memorabilia related to the lives of the current inhabitants of Świdnica, including artwork by local schoolchildren. The chest, guarded by a small boar, symbolizes the chest in the crypt. Other boars guard it alongside him. The chest is to be reopened in a hundred years.
The coat of arms, which includes an image of a boar, can be seen in many places in Świdnica, including the town square. The history of this town – formerly the capital of the duchy and now one of the bishoprics of Lower Silesia – is recounted in detail in an exhibition at the local Museum of Old Merchants.
